American Airlines is setting its sights on a promising revenue increase for 2026, although it fell short of earnings expectations for the fourth quarter of the previous year. The airline, based in Fort Worth, Texas, announced that its strategy to focus on premium offerings is anticipated to yield positive outcomes starting in 2026. This move comes as American aims to bridge the profitability gap with its competitors and take advantage of the growing demand from affluent travelers.
The airline has projected an improvement of nearly $2 in adjusted earnings per share compared to last year’s figures, indicating a significant upward trend. Furthermore, American anticipates a revenue growth of 7% to 10% during the first quarter of 2026 when compared to the same period in 2025.
In reviewing American's performance for the fourth quarter, the results did not quite meet Wall Street's forecasts, based on estimates gathered by LSEG:
- Adjusted earnings per share were reported at 16 cents, whereas analysts had expected 34 cents.
- Revenue reached $14 billion, slightly below the anticipated $14.03 billion.
Despite this, the airline recorded a net income of $99 million, translating to 15 cents per share, which reflects a 2.5% increase in revenue year-over-year. When excluding special items, adjusted earnings per share stood at 16 cents.
CEO Robert Isom expressed confidence in American Airlines' potential for considerable growth in 2026 and beyond, stating, "We have built a strong foundation, and we look forward to taking advantage of the investments we have made in our customer experience, network, fleet, partnerships, and loyalty program."
However, it’s important to note that the recent government shutdown negatively impacted fourth-quarter revenue by approximately $325 million. Additionally, a winter storm over the weekend led to significant disruptions, resulting in the highest number of flight cancellations since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. This storm has caused a reduction of 1.5 percentage points in the company's capacity guidance for the first quarter of 2026, along with an estimated revenue loss ranging from $150 million to $200 million. Notably, five of American's nine hub airports experienced disruptions, including its primary hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
Even though passenger unit revenue fell by 2.5% year-over-year, it is worth mentioning that this figure would have shown growth if not for the adverse effects of the government shutdown. On a more positive note, American's premium product offerings have continued to perform strongly, with premium unit revenue surpassing that of the main cabin for the fourth quarter.
In efforts to attract customers who are willing to spend more on premium tickets and co-branded credit cards, American has been revamping its fleet, lounges, and food and beverage services. Nevertheless, it faces stiff competition, particularly from Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which currently dominate the market and account for nearly all of the industry's profits.
