Atlas V Rocket Launch: Amazon's Satellite Internet Mission (2026)

Get ready to witness a celestial spectacle! On December 15th, early in the morning, the Atlas V rocket will embark on a mission to deploy a fresh batch of Amazon's internet satellites into orbit. This launch is a significant step in expanding global internet access, and you can watch it live – if you're an early bird or a night owl!

This mission is part of Amazon's ambitious Project Kuiper, now known as Amazon Leo, a project aiming to establish a massive satellite-based internet network in low Earth orbit (LEO). But what exactly does this entail?

Project Kuiper plans to deploy a staggering 3,200 satellites. These satellites will work together to provide internet connectivity to people worldwide. To put this into perspective, imagine a network of thousands of tiny internet providers circling the Earth, working together to beam the internet down to you! This project requires over 80 launches using a variety of rockets. To date, six missions have been completed, placing 153 satellites in LEO. (This doesn't include a test mission in October 2023, which carried two prototype satellites.)

This upcoming launch will be the fourth Project Leo mission for the Atlas V, a reliable rocket that has been in service since August 2002. However, the Atlas V is gradually being replaced by ULA's newer vehicle, the Vulcan Centaur, which has already completed three missions.

But here's where it gets controversial... Project Leo aims to compete directly with SpaceX's Starlink, a similar megaconstellation that already provides internet service via over 9,000 satellites in LEO. SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 Starlink satellites in 2025 alone, highlighting the rapid growth of this industry.

And this is the part most people miss... Interestingly, SpaceX is also involved in building the Project Leo network! Their Falcon 9 rocket is among those being used, alongside Arianespace's Ariane 6, Blue Origin's New Glenn, and ULA's Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur. This collaboration underscores the complex and competitive nature of the space industry.
