In a groundbreaking announcement, British architectural firm Foster + Partners has unveiled their ambitious and first-ever project in Angola, which involves the development of a vast aerotropolis. This innovative masterplan aims to transform a remarkable expanse of 13,480 hectares surrounding the newly completed Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport, located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Luanda, the nation’s capital.
Dubbed the Icolo e Bengo Aerotropolis, this extensive endeavor is envisioned as a means to enhance Angola's visibility on the global stage while drawing investment into Luanda. Gerard Evenden, the head of the studio, expressed excitement about revealing their designs, stating, "We are thrilled to introduce our plans for the practice's inaugural project in Angola." He elaborated that the new airport is intended to serve as a catalyst for developing a vibrant city that will become a central hub for business, education, and hospitality, harmoniously integrated with Luanda's stunning natural scenery.
The concept of an aerotropolis refers to a city or subregion that is strategically designed around an airport, promoting connectivity and accessibility. Foster + Partners envisions Icolo e Bengo Aerotropolis as consisting of three distinct districts located in the northern, western, and southern areas surrounding the airport. These zones will be interconnected by a lush green loop that spans 42 kilometers, incorporating an efficient transport network featuring public buses, trams, and cycling paths.
Furthermore, this development will boast landscaped green spaces that are thoughtfully designed to manage rainwater runoff towards the nearby Kwanza River, showcasing native vegetation as well as areas where visitors can unwind and engage in physical activities.
The northern district will focus on business and cultural endeavors and will be directly linked to Luanda's existing city center. As the first phase of this grand project, it is expected to feature high-rise buildings that contribute to the skyline. To the west, a research and innovation district will be established, characterized by lower structures, while the southern area will be designed primarily for hospitality, situated adjacent to Quisama National Park. This southern district aims to develop luxurious accommodations such as hotels and villas, along with sports facilities, positioning itself as a premier destination within Angola.
A significant aspect of the Icolo e Bengo Aerotropolis is its commitment to sustainability; it is planned to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including the installation of three square kilometers of photovoltaic panels near the airport. The overall design is also geared towards harnessing natural wind patterns to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the development.
Founded in 1967 by the renowned British architect Norman Foster, Foster + Partners continues to push boundaries in architecture. In addition to the aerotropolis in Angola, the firm is currently working on its first pub project and is designing a sculpture garden next to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
