Manchester United's summer transfer saga kicks off with a surprising twist! It seems the Red Devils are on the verge of securing their first summer signing, but it's not a blockbuster striker or a midfield maestro – it's a goalkeeper! According to reports emerging from Turkey, an agreement has been struck between Manchester United and Turkish club Besiktas for the transfer of Altay Bayindir.
Fanatik, a Turkish sports publication, claims that the clubs held a meeting this week, and the deal is expected to be finalized for approximately €5 million (around £4.3 million) once the transfer window officially swings open. Bayindir, who is 27 years old, currently has one year left on his contract with Manchester United, with the club holding an option to extend it by another 12 months. However, it appears an exit is on the cards, as Besiktas is reportedly making significant progress in agreeing personal terms with the shot-stopper.
But here's where it gets interesting... The same report suggests that Besiktas actually tried to sign Bayindir back in the January transfer window, but Manchester United blocked the move at the eleventh hour. This implies that the club had plans for him, even if those plans didn't fully materialize in the way they might have initially envisioned.
Bayindir started the season as United's primary goalkeeper in the Premier League. However, he soon lost his starting spot to Senne Lammens, a summer acquisition, at the beginning of October and hasn't featured since. This shift in the pecking order has paved the way for his potential departure.
A potential exit for the Turkish international would certainly create a vacancy, and it's a situation that Andre Onana is keenly watching. As per The Guardian, Onana, who is currently on loan at Trabzonspor, is eager to fight his way back to reclaim his position as Manchester United's undisputed No. 1. He reportedly believes he will be given a fair chance to prove his worth.
Onana has managed four clean sheets in his 20 appearances across all competitions for Trabzonspor this season. However, he'll face a considerable challenge if he aims to dislodge Senne Lammens, who has been receiving high praise. Gary Neville, the former Manchester United captain, has been particularly impressed with Lammens, tipping him for a “big, big future.”
Neville, speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Everton, highlighted the immense pressure on goalkeepers in English football. He admitted to having initial concerns about Lammens, questioning the decision to bring in such a young goalkeeper without extensive pedigree, fearing the spotlight at Manchester United might be overwhelming. However, Neville's doubts have been replaced by admiration. He stated, "It is early days, but he looks like he’s got the temperament and he’s got the technical quality. He’s doing the right things – he holds the ball when he should hold it, he punches when he should punch, but even when he punches it’s not one of those wild punches – everything seems under control. This kid, he’s come in and I really have been impressed with him. He looks like he’s got a big, big future early days."
Now, over to you! With Altay Bayindir seemingly on his way out and Andre Onana eager to return, do you think Senne Lammens can maintain his impressive form and secure the No. 1 spot long-term? Or is Onana's determination enough to win him back the gloves? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your predictions!
