Portsmouth Prepares to Remember the Blitz Victims: A City's Resilience and Tribute
In a poignant tribute to the past, Portsmouth is gearing up to commemorate the lives lost during the Blitz 85 years ago. This weekend, the city will pay homage to its residents who were tragically killed during the air raids, with a series of emotional events and activities.
The Blitz, a devastating campaign by the Luftwaffe, targeted British cities and towns, including Portsmouth, between September 1940 and May 1941. The city suffered its most devastating air raid on January 10, 1941, resulting in the loss of over 150 lives. This event will be marked with a special service in Guildhall Square, featuring poignant readings and poems from 10:15 GMT on Saturday.
The Royal Garrison Church will also host a Weekend of Remembrance, from 11:00 on Saturday and Sunday, organized by English Heritage and The Pompey Pals Charity. Visitors can expect a blend of wartime musical performances, historical re-enactments, and insightful talks, offering a unique glimpse into the past. Additionally, a new plaque will be unveiled at the World War II monument in Guildhall Square, honoring Jean Louth's tireless 27-year campaign to ensure the memorial was built.
Portsmouth City Council's leader, Steve Pitt, emphasized the significance of these commemorations, stating, 'As we gather to mark the 85th anniversary of the January Blitz, we honor the strength and resilience shown by the people of Portsmouth during one of the darkest moments in our city's history.
