The painting, created by Tom Jung, first graced newspaper ads on May 13, 1977, just weeks before the release of the original Star Wars film. It featured Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and the looming Darth Vader, with an X-wing starfighter attack in the background. Han Solo, Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi were also depicted, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO were added later, making it a true evolution of the Star Wars universe.
"It's more than just a painting," says Charles Epting, director of pop culture and historical consignments at Heritage Auctions. "It's a cultural artifact, a piece of American history." Epting believes the emotional connection fans have with Star Wars is a significant factor in the painting's high sales price.
And this is the part most people miss... the painting's journey from the office wall of Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz, who passed it down to his daughter, to the auction block at Heritage's Dallas headquarters. The sale not only set records for Star Wars memorabilia but also for any movie poster artwork.
The buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, has acquired a piece of cinematic and cultural history. Prior to this, the highest-priced franchise memorabilia was Darth Vader's lightsaber, which sold for $3.6 million. But this painting, with its unique story and cultural significance, has surpassed even that iconic prop.
