A community in Louisville, Kentucky, is speaking out against a proposed fare hike for TARC3 Paratransit, a vital service for individuals with disabilities. This potential increase has sparked concerns among families who rely on this transportation option.
Ashley Swafford, a blind mother of two, shares her family's dependence on TARC3. "It's our way to go out and enjoy activities together. We rely on TARC3 for almost everything," she explains.
TARC, the transit authority, is proposing its first fare change since 2012. The new proposal would see TARC3 prices jump from $3.00 to $4.50. Swafford questions the logic behind such a significant increase: "If they must raise fares, why target TARC3 with a $1.50 hike? What benefit will that bring?"
Lauren Allen, another visually impaired parent, echoes Swafford's sentiments. Her family, including her blind husband and two children, uses TARC3 daily. "The fare increase is quite steep. I understand the need for an increase, but not to this extent," Allen says.
Allen's family was taken by surprise when they learned of the proposed hike. "We had been told for months that fare increases wouldn't happen, so it was a shock when it was announced," she adds.
TARC officials cite the need for a sustainable transit service as a reason for the increase. They also emphasize the importance of gathering feedback before the Board of Directors can consider any changes.
Swafford has a clear message for TARC officials: "Don't overlook the importance of paratransit. Families like mine and low-income families depend on it. The impact of this increase on low-income families will be devastating."
