Tom Wilson's Olympic Dream: Playing with McDavid & Celebrini (2026)

Playing alongside hockey legends like Connor McDavid has transformed Tom Wilson's career into a dream come true! But what does it really take to perform at that elite level?

For Tom Wilson, a childhood aspiration became a reality when he was selected to represent Canada on the Olympic hockey team. Since then, he hasn't just been a participant; he's been a key player, consistently appearing in every game for the red, black, and white. More remarkably, he's been a prominent figure, skating on the top offensive line with none other than the undisputed best player in the world, Connor McDavid, and the highly touted young phenom, Macklin Celebrini.

Connor McDavid, a 29-year-old superstar, is currently dominating the hockey world. Entering the Olympics, he was leading the NHL in points with a staggering 96 and held the second-highest goal tally with 34. Over his impressive 11-year NHL career, McDavid has secured the Art Ross Trophy five times for leading the league in scoring and has been awarded the Hart Trophy as league MVP on three occasions. As the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, he's also guided his team to two consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances, showcasing his exceptional leadership and skill.

Wilson shared his excitement, stating, “Playing with Connor (McDavid) has been a highlight of my career, obviously.” He further elaborated on McDavid's impact, describing him as “such a great guy, such a quiet leader. I can learn so much from him…” Wilson explained his role when on the ice with McDavid and Celebrini: “I just try and create as much space for them as I can.”

“My mentality is I’m not going to change,” Wilson emphasized. “I’m at this point in my career. You know, I depend on my work ethic. If I’m playing fast and physical, that’s when I’m at my best. If I get the puck to those guys, the rest will take care of itself. So, I’m not thinking about changing too much. Those guys are so good that they’ll bring out the best of me. I mean, Connor, Macklin, two of the best players in the world. I just have to focus on executing my game, and it’ll be good. It’s been a very cool experience playing with those guys, and they’re having a heck of a tournament, obviously, so it’s been fun to watch.”

But here's where it gets interesting: McDavid is currently leading the Olympic tournament with an impressive 9 points (2 goals, 7 assists) in just three games, while Celebrini ranks fourth with six points (4 goals, 2 assists). It's not just the superstars who are shining; Wilson himself is performing at a point-per-game pace, having scored his first-ever Olympic goal and contributing three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in three games.

What Wilson is truly absorbing from this experience is the intangible quality that separates the world's top players. He remarked, “It’s been so fun just to see that caliber of superstar player, the best in the world… For me, just to take that all in and see how quickly they make decisions, how good they are.”

He continued, “You realize those guys like Nate (MacKinnon) and Connor, they bring it every single day. They’re the hardest-working guys. Sid’s (Sidney Crosby) right there. They set the tone. And a day like today, they come out, Connor and Sid are the hardest-working guys executing at the highest level on the ice in practice. So, I’m going to try and take it all in, learn as much as I can from them.”

While Wilson is currently leading the Capitals in both goals (23) and points (49), the future captain sees that there are still untapped levels to his game, achievable through even greater dedication.

And this is the part most people miss... Wilson even shared a lighthearted moment: “Yeah, I mean, there was one play on the power play, I said, ‘Nate definitely would have made that pass to Sid, 10 out of 10 times.’ So they were calling me Nate out there for a couple of minutes, but I think it was just in good fun.”

What do you think? Is it the sheer talent of players like McDavid that elevates their teammates, or is it the willingness of players like Wilson to adapt and learn that truly unlocks potential? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
