Tour Down Under Stage 4 SHORTENED! Willunga Hill REMOVED Due to Extreme Heat & Fire Danger! (2026)

The Tour Down Under faces a fiery challenge! In a dramatic turn of events, the iconic Willunga Hill climb has been axed from stage 4 due to extreme fire danger and scorching temperatures reaching 43°C. But here's the twist: this decision has sparked a strategic shift in the race dynamics.

Originally, stage 4 promised an intense battle over 176km with 2,492m of elevation gain, featuring three ascents of the legendary Willunga Hill. However, the revised stage will now commence an hour earlier in Brighton, covering a shorter 131km route, bypassing the hill climb entirely.

Race director Stuart O'Grady acknowledged the disappointment for cycling enthusiasts but emphasized the paramount importance of rider and spectator safety. After consulting with emergency services, riders, and the UCI, the decision was made to modify the stage.

Stage 2 had already set the tone for a thrilling competition, with UAE Team Emirate-XRG's Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez claiming a one-minute lead. The removal of Willunga Hill now transforms stage 4 from a climber's showdown to a sprinter's paradise, with eight riders within ten seconds of third place.

The finish line remains unchanged, mirroring stage 1 of the Women's Tour Down Under, where Ally Wollaston sprinted to victory. Despite the unexpected change, stage 3 winner Sam Welsford hinted at whispers among riders regarding the challenging conditions.

The earlier start and reduced distance might alter the race strategy, but the heat remains a formidable factor. Even with a shorter stage, temperatures are predicted to soar to 40°C by 12:30, impacting the riders' performance.

Welsford noted the intense heat experienced during the race, emphasizing the difference between air temperature and the scorching conditions on the road. As the race unfolds, the question lingers: will the modified stage favor the sprinters, or will the heat prove to be the ultimate game-changer?

Stay tuned as the Tour Down Under continues to deliver surprises, and don't forget to subscribe for exclusive insights and expert analysis as the race captivates Australia and the world!
