Originally, stage 4 promised an intense battle over 176km with 2,492m of elevation gain, featuring three ascents of the legendary Willunga Hill. However, the revised stage will now commence an hour earlier in Brighton, covering a shorter 131km route, bypassing the hill climb entirely.
Race director Stuart O'Grady acknowledged the disappointment for cycling enthusiasts but emphasized the paramount importance of rider and spectator safety. After consulting with emergency services, riders, and the UCI, the decision was made to modify the stage.
Stage 2 had already set the tone for a thrilling competition, with UAE Team Emirate-XRG's Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez claiming a one-minute lead. The removal of Willunga Hill now transforms stage 4 from a climber's showdown to a sprinter's paradise, with eight riders within ten seconds of third place.
