Rodríguez, in her first State of the Union address, presented a new vision for Venezuela, challenging long-held beliefs. This is a significant departure from previous stances, as she stated, "Venezuela, in free trade relations with the world, can sell the products of its energy industry."
But here's where it gets controversial: The Trump administration has stated its intention to control future oil export revenues, claiming the goal is to benefit the Venezuelan people. Rodríguez suggested the funds would be channeled into two sovereign wealth funds, one to support the struggling healthcare system and another to improve public infrastructure. However, the current state of the country's hospitals, where patients are asked to provide their own medical supplies, paints a grim picture of the existing conditions.
Despite criticizing the U.S. actions, Rodríguez also advocated for resuming diplomacy. Her speech, a mere 44 minutes long, was a stark contrast to the lengthy, fiery speeches of her predecessors. She emphasized, "Let us not be afraid of diplomacy." And this is the part most people miss: The day before, she announced the continued release of prisoners detained under Maduro's rule, although human rights groups have questioned the extent of these releases.
Rodríguez appears to be walking a tightrope. While speaking, a portrait of Maduro and his wife was displayed, and she called for the U.S. to respect Maduro's dignity.
